409 Don't Check Or Test Your Backups

A backup needs to be automated and require as little human involvement as is feasible. Follow this checklist of worst practices.

In response to the show title being terrible advice. Here is some real things to put on your backup checklist.

  • Get Email Notifications: Whether you get them or your clients get them, you should choose to get documentation where a backup is successful or fails.
  • Check the Email: If you get the emails, someone should read them. Or at the very least, make Sure it doesn't go to the spam folder.
  • Test the backups: Just because you can see the file doesn't mean you can recover the file.
  • Don't ignore warnings: If you've read this far... send me an email and let me know what we left out.
